PAL

PALIO

The pal (derived by Latin pallium, cloak by wool) is a liturgical parade used in Catholic Church, consisting of a strip of white wool cloth wrapped on the shoulders. It represents the sheep that the shepherd bears on his shoulders as Christ and is therefore a symbol of the task pastoral ministry who wears it.

Initially used by all bishops, then the bishop of Rome it is reserved the exclusive of the package, the use for itself and the concession to some bishops and archbishops or to certain episcopal and archbishopial offices. The pallium is also the prerogative of archbishop Metropolitans, as a symbol of jurisdiction in communion with the Holy See.

Corresponds tohomophor (omophórion) used in Orthodox Church from all bishops.
