The stole is the most important liturgical vestment in the liturgy Catholic and also used by other Christian communities, consisting of a strip of cloth usually embroidered, whose color varies according to the liturgical season.

Usage

Because it is the distinctive element proper to the ordained minister, in celebrations and rites it is very important that the priest always wear the stole, even under the chasuble or the cope. Only ordained ministers also wear the stole:

• the deacon wears it crosswise, from the left shoulder to the right hip.

• the presbyter brings it down straight, from the shoulders down to the legs (he used to cross it).

• the bishop brings it down straight, from the shoulders down to the legs.

The priest, while putting it on before the Eucharistic Celebration, recites the following prayer (or the corresponding one in Latin): "Give me, Lord, the stole of immortality, which I lost because of the sin of the progenitors; and though I unworthily access your holy mysteries, may I equally obtain your grace."
