What, said Peter (Betsaida, Century B.C. – Rome, 67 about), it was one of twelve apostles of Jesus; is considered the first pope of the Catholic Church. Born in Galilee was a Jewish fisherman Capernaum. Its original name was Šimôn (שמעון, "he who listens", transliterated into ancient Greek as Σίμων).

He became an apostle of Jesus after he called him to lake Galilee, was part of a narrow circle (together with John and James) of the three who witnessed the resurrection of the daughter of Giairo transfiguration and the agony of Jesus in the garden of olive trees. According to tradition, he became the first bishop of Antioch of Syria for about 30 years, from 34 to 64 AD, he continued his preaching until Rome where he died between 64 and the 67, during anti-christian persecution ordered by Nero. In Rome Peter and Paul are venerated together as founding columns of Church.
