Simon, known as Peter (Bethsaida, first century B.C. - Rome, 67 about), was one of twelve apostles of Jesus; he is considered the first pope of the Catholic Church. Born in Galilee, he was a Jewish fisherman from Capernaum. His original name was Šim'ôn (שמעון, "the one who listens," transliterated in ancient Greek as Σίμων).

He became an apostle of Jesus after the latter called him at Lake Galilee, and was part of an inner circle (along with John and James) of the three who witnessed the resurrection of Jairus' daughter, transfiguration and Jesus' agony in the Garden of Olives. He attempted to defend the Master from arrest, succeeding only in wounding one of the attackers. The only one, along with the so-called "beloved disciple," to follow Jesus to the house of high priest Caiaphas, he too was forced to flee after denying the Master three times, as the Master had predicted. After the crucifixion and subsequent resurrection of Jesus, Peter was appointed by the Master himself as the leader of the twelve apostles and thus the promoter of the movement that would later become the first Christian Church .

A tireless preacher, he was the first to baptize a pagan, the centurion Cornelius. He came into disagreement with Paul of Tarsus over some issues concerning Jews and pagans, which were resolved, however, at the first council in Jerusalem. According to tradition, he became the first bishop of Antioch of Syria for about 30 years, from 34 to 64 A.D. He continued his preaching until Rome where he died between 64 and 67, during the anti-Christian persecutions ordered by Nero. In Rome Peter and Paul are venerated together as the founding pillars of the Church. Peter is considered saint by all Christian denominations, although some deny the Petrine primacy and others the papal primacy that follows. (source wikipedia)
