Santa Rita da Cascia (the cult and canonization)
His body was first placed in a simple case, called "humile cash", and was never inhumanized because of the immediate devotion from which he was invested. The first miracles were recorded by the notaries in Codex miraculorum (Code of Miracles) from 1457 and up to 1563 (in total, forty-six miracles). Following a fire, in 1457, the so-called "holy casket", decorated with images of the Saint and with a short text in the dialect casciano fifteenth century which sums up the last years of his life. The case is still preserved in the cell where he died, in the ancient part of the monastery of Cascia. In 1743 the psalm was translated into a baroque urn, and in 1947 in the current glass case inside the basilica.
The veneration of Rita da Cascia by the faithful began immediately after his death and was characterized by the high number and quality of the prodigious events, referring to his intercession, so much so that he acquired the admission of "santa of the impossible". His beatification but after several vicissitudes, it happened only in 1628, 180 years after his death, during pontificate of Urban VIII, already bishop of Spoleto. Leo XIII, in 1900, he canonized her as holy. His devout believers call it "horse than impossible", because from the day of his death he would be "go down" alongside the most needy, realizing for them prodigious miracles, events otherwise considered unrealizable. Catholic popular devotion for Saint Rita is still one of the most widespread in the world, but, since 1600 and by the work of Augustinians, is particularly rooted, as well as in Italy, in Spain, Portugal and Latin America.
With the reform of the liturgical year of Martyrologio Romano, on May 22, her holiday, became memory.
